Ep 15: Dr. Leonard John Faye on Paradigm Shifts in Chiropractic, Motion Palpation and the VSC
January 9th, 2011 at 8:21 pm (chiropractic, subluxation, education, motion palpation)
Leonard "John" Faye is best known for driving a major change in the theoretical framework of chiropractic in the early 1980's. He helped chiropractors in the United States move from a faith-based static "bone out of place" model to a dynamic, movement based, functional model. He was a leader in the paradigm shift from a philosophical method to a more scientific model of explaining what chiropractors do.
Dr. Faye founded the Motion Palpation Institute and helped start Dynamic Chiropractic, the most widely read chiropractic trade newspaper. He talks about these things in the podcast interview in addition to discussing his formulation of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex model. Dr. Faye talks openly about what was wrong with the VSC model and how it has been misinterpreted over the years.
Dr. Faye has recently redone the old MPI videos which were instrumental in helping thousands of chiropractors perfect their manual adjusting skills and now has over 6 hours of all new digitally filmed spinal & extremity palpation and manipulation technique videos on a 2 DVD set.

Thank you for posting this fine interview!
Dr Faye’s MPI struck me as merely “interesting” whilst I was in school, how sad that I could not create the time to visit the MPI club more often than I did. (I found my academic demands most challenging at that time.)Thankfully, he has re-done his DVD set, and there is, IMO, great worth to his work. (And I am skeptical of most leaders in the Chiro profession!) I also find the idea that all DCs should master his “180 Adjustments” to bring a uniformity to the profession a most accurate one. Like many other DCs, I believe a consistent public image and delivery of service (albeit it only on one level, with other services or techniques as adjunctive) would do much for our profession. His explanation of what happened to the VSC model during his time is also interesting. Great stuff, please continue to post similar inspiring material! Blessings, DrC

Wow, what a great interview.
I have had the good fortune to have taken a number of seminars from Dr. Faye and even had the opportunity to take him out to lunch once. He taught me through his first videos how to find the manipulatable lesion and then how to manipulate it. It’s good to hear the old boy still burns with the passion he always has. The chiropractic profession owes alot to Dr Faye. He may not be my guru, but he certainly is one of my heros.
Thank you for the great interview.
