I have had a lot of success using Magnesium supplements and Omega 3 fatty acids. Both these have been found to be deficient in the American diet and both deficiencies contribute to chronic inflammation.

I am a DC and see my patients in a medical office, so there is both an MD and a DC in the office at the same time. I have found that very often I end up with the patients that were originally coming in to see the MD, because they want something more. I have also had patients that originally came in to see me, but then ended up going to the MD for pills. I am not afraid to say that I think prescription rights for chiropractors would be a good thing. I am not sure if we should be able to prescribe everything, but we certainly should be able to prescribe "certain" meds for pain. After all, most of our patients are coming to us for pain. These drugs can be helpful at times. Why should we be limited like this? By the way, there is a grass roots association that is taking off like wildfire. It started in FL. Their main goal is to expand our rights.

Dr Vincent,
There are a small number of visionaries I trust that our profession's survival is due to - DD, Carver, Homewood, Illi, Janse, Sandoz, Faye, Haldeman, KW, Meeker, & yourself. The future of chiropractic has to be discovering the the innate intelligence is the viz medicatrix naturae, or wisdome of the body to heal itself. DD said we treat dis-ease. While Janse spoke of the subluxation as an "environmental irritation of the nervous system." We must couple our Aesclepian approach of "fixing" w/ adjustments with an equal fervor about the Hygenic school of thought of teaching patients how to care for themselves. The marketplace will not support the status quo. You have been preaching this for decades. I hope more clinicians begin to heed your message. It is not enough to be "evidence-based", but we must also be "patient-centered."
Thanks,
Craig

I would also like to agree and appreciate what Dr. Lehman said. Although I am not a Chiropractor myself, I have sought out chiropractor care and the doctor that I worked with did take the time to understand my history and look at what was going on with my body as a whole before just throwing me on the table and cracking me into place. It certainly helped me to gain confidence that he was looking out for my own good and not just trying to make a buck.

Dr. Kinsler,

I just finished listening to Dr. Farrell's comments on standardizing our lexicon in chiropractic and I couldn't agree more. The term subluxation could easily be done away with and replaced with a broader diagnostic categorization as proposed by guidelines such as the 2007 American College of Physicians/American Pain Society, and 2008 Neck Pain Task Force. In my opinion this would streamline diagnostic language for colleges, associations and insurers alike, and allow us to finally start looking at dose-response relationships in a critical manner for each diagnostic category (ie. non-specific low back pain). We would then be able to say to organizations such as the maximized living group that "hey, 40-50 visits over 18 months isn't actually necessary to improve simple LBP!"

If the profession's goal is to move to a more culturally accepted position, then it needs to separate the wheat from the chaff. I feel that standardized treatment timelines, standardized treatment protocols, standardized lexicon, and unified associations is the ONLY way to reach that goal. The foundation is in place for a paradigm shift in chiropractic, but it needs a push. If I could put a little spin on Sir Isaac's 2nd law: "The [chiropractic profession] remains constant unless the [chiropractic profession] is acted upon by an external force"! ;)

Feedback anyone?

P.S: Huge fan of the podcast Dr. Kinsler!!!

Dear Dr. Kinsler:
Every chiropractic college faculty member and administrator should listen to this interview with Dr. James Eubanks. He is wise beyond his years in practice. Any chiropractic physician willing to integrate into the health care system would benefit from the sage advice provided by Jim.

Really enjoyed the podcast. UNM is one of the lead CAHCIM schools and it is wonderful to hear more about their work. Very exciting!

I am a recent graduate from the University of Western States and I would like to provide more information (and links) to a similar student led program in Portland, OR. The student led group is the Student Alliance for Integrative Medicine (SAIM) which developed from a more seasoned group - the Oregon Collaborative for Integrative Medicine (OCIM).

OCIM is a collaborative that combines the 4 local healthcare schools in Portland - chiropractic (UWS), allopathic (OHSU), naturopathic (NCNM) and oriental medicine (OCOM); the 4 college presidents serve as the board members. Historically OCIM has been an institution led organization hosting multiple speaking engagements, hosting an annual research symposium (SPARC), etc.

In Fall of 2009 a group of students started the Student Alliance for Integrative Medicine (SAIM) under the guidance of OCIM leaders and has thrived with students meeting once per month, hosting expert panels, rotated student to student lectures and celebrating International Integrative Medicine day . IIMDAY is an event originally developed by the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and is celebrated all over the world each January.

It is very exciting to hear that the concept of working together to provide excellent patient centered and evidence based care is growing. growing both in academic institutions like UNM and in practice as well as highlighted by the podcast (Jordan Hospital, Orthocarolina, etc.).

A request for future podcast guests include Matt Kowalski of Harvard's OSHER institute, Rick Branson of the Fairview hospital system in MN, and a integrative thought leader from within CAHCIM or ACCAHC... Thank you for the quality and content!

Great podcast Dr. Kinsler. Hopefully, other healthcare professionals will appreciate the integrative efforts of Dr. Arti Prassad at the University of New Mexico. The patients deserve integrative behavior by all healthcare professionals. Afterall, we are expected to provide patient-centered care, which requires interdisciplinary communications. Congratulations to all of the students and healthcare providers at UNM.
